cell phones during a hunt

How many have you been on a cast where people are talking on there cell phone? I looked in the rules up and down and could not find a rule agaist this execpt for talking to other casts. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

i went on a cast about a month ago in kenney illinois and our judge was extremely anal about cell phones. he said to turn them off and leave them in your truck.if he saw us useing them at any point he would disqualify us on the spot. no matter what.

Posted by hound2 on 07-14-2007 09:24 PM:

I think UKC will need to address the cell phone issue beyond what they have stated in the Advisor. I was on a cast last night where the handlers spectator was in the truck, driving around locating a dog and calling the handler to tell him where the dog was and what he was doing. This was during the course of the hunt with dogs struck in, one treed, and the clock running. Obviously, that guys hunt ended right there. Give them an inch............

IT SHOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SUSPENSION. IT IS OBVIOUSLY CHEATING. AND AS WAS EVIDENT IN ANOTHER REGISTRY'S CASE, YOU DO NOT NEED SOMEONE WHO IS NOT PART OF THE CAST OUT THERE "HELPING" TO HANDLE THE DOG.

I do not see a problem having a a cell phone on a cast as long as it is on vibrate or off. You never know when you might need it in a medical emergency.

They should rule it like tracking equipment. Use them when the clock is off. If used during hunt time, scratch.

Good Idea. Cell phones do have there place such as the GPS in them to find you if something were to happen. My brother and I have used them (pleasure hunting) once to save a dogs life and once for my brother. I carry mine I dont leave it in the truck.

Just my two cents worth

Just a thought to ponder, these new Garmin GPS tracking devices for keeping track of dogs while being hunted look to be a tremendous invention. I do see that they could be an issue in a nite hunt. Apparently., you can attatch the unit to a shock collar, and then keep track of the dog while hunting. You use the unit just like a regular gps. I have a garmin gps, a rino 530 and it has been very useful in coonhuning. Before the rules change, or enough people use them, I can see that in the hands of an unscrupulous hunter, some people will use them to unfair advantage. Time will tell.

I don't go anywhere without my cell. It's permanently attached to my back pocket (or, in my husbands opinion, my ear). In fact, they will likely bury me with it. Good luck to the person who tries removing it!

Seriously though, I don't see a problem with having them with you. Just don't use them during the hunt. First off, it's rude and annoying... second it is to easy to cheat with them.

i'd like to see it like the use of a tracking system, only on time outs, and or emergencies.

i have other things in my life alot more important than comp hunting and emergincies arise i dont leave my cell any where i put it on silent but if it vibrates i check to see who it is all it is is something for cry babys to cry about so what if someone calls scores to a buddy will that help you tree any more coon

I don't see what the big deal is in using them.

If I'm a cheater and willing to falsify a scorecard, I don't need to know what some other cast scored to do that. Thats the ONLY semi-legitimate reason I've heard not to use one.

On the other hand there are several legitimate reasons to use one during a hunt. Save gas, check on spots to hunt, emergencies, and so on.

Trying to say what and when they can be used is just going to cause problems. If I'm on the phone, having a private conversation nobody needs to know what I'm saying. But with UKC's current stance, the judge really needs to know what the conversation is about. I see trouble brewing...

hound2 --- i agree, it will not help you tree more coon.. but it will help one handler or guide not do his job as good trying to help a buddy.. it will in fact if one guide knows he has more than one coon lead take a cast where he knows there will be NO strike.. i think they are good (as most on here have stated) for emergencies... but the one thing you can guarantee, it will get you scratched for talking to another cast or the MOH..

i hear those dang things ring all day... i go hunting to get away from them.. i can't understand why someone can't two hours to talk on one.. it would not hurt my feelings to go two weeks between phone calls

I agree that having them in case of an emergency is a great thing you never know what might happen. I thing as long as you ain't talking during the hunt and disturbing people they are fine. JMO!!!

Well fellows I look at it this way. If I am in the woods and need help my cell phone will be with me. If I am in the woods and my family (which if I am in the woods I am not with them) needs help they can get me. The rules say that cell phones can't be used to call other casts durning a hunt. It doesn't say you can have them or even have them on. Common sense and making an example out of a few cheaters will solve this problem and we can go on with our lives.

I am on call 24 hrs a day, need to be in touch,if it is a emgency, I have to go. so I carry my cell phone. The rules are there, just use the ones we have. No talking to cast members about other scores, don;t use tracking devise untill time outs, what's so hard/

Posted by Libby on 07-17-2007 04:44 PM:

never imagined all the ways you could cheat with a cell phone.

I assumed the score thing was so people wouldn't scratch and quit because they were too far behind...after all you'll tree as many as you can, you wouldn't stop after +450 because the other cast finshed with +375 since you have to hunt the full two hours anyway. learn something new every day!

I agreed with not discussing scores before all casts in because it just makes sense...even before the cellphone rule.

I think that rule is written very well. For the reasons already given and so casts can communicate where they are going when they change spots. For instance, "are ya'll finished with cherry orchard, we're leaving the filbert orchard if you need it" etc. I hear complaints of diminishing hunting areas from all over the country, so I doubt recycling spots during a nite hunt is that uncommon. It's that or drive 100 miles to the next virgin spot.

Cheaters will cheat. Like the saying goes, locks are for honest people. Dishonest will get in any.

I save all my tracking collar numbers in my phone, and last saturday at a nite hunt, on time out i pulled out my phone to get my collar # and the guy yells at the judge HES USING A PHONE. lol. What would you have done? This was on time out and i was in a hurry to find my dog obviously wasnt looking for scores lol.
