Which Tracking Collars Do You Use!?

I'm in the market for a few new collars, but I was wondering what other people are using. I've had Klein Collars, Johnson, and Brehm. The Brehm Collars aways threw out the best signals, but Dave Brehm stopped making collars now so I was kind of looking for a new company to try. Any suggestions from the guys who hunt the mountains?

Posted by sam2145871 on 07-05-2007 10:55 PM:

One other thing was that Dave Brehm always said that he put "something special" in his collars to make them reach a bit more. Anyone know what this might be?

Alright so has anyone tried making their own collars!? One of my hounds was hit by a vehicle and his collar got thrashed so I started looking through it. It doesn't look all that complicated. Any ideas if it's possible to source all the parts or where to find them?

yes you can make them yourself ... but to answer your question ... Johnson collars and a trx 1000 wildlife materials box... you cant go wrong and i prefer the 16000 hour sealed battery collars.. they are like the energizer bunny .. they keep going and going and going and going ...etc....... happy hunting

I own several Johnson collars, but I bought my 1st Marshall a few months ago. I have been very impressed. There have been several times when I know my dogs where all together and the Marshall was the only collar I could get a beep on. I also like the other features like the swipe the magnet to turn it on and off. I will be buying another one soon.

Well I decided to just go and order 1 johnson and one marshall tonight and compare. I'll have to see which one works better. Where I hunt there are alot of hills with iron and it seems to do some crazy stuff to the signals. for the price they get for the marshalls I sure hope it works good, lol.

Johnson collars are some of the toughest, but don't aways give off the better signal. Some work better than others, thats why you get good, and bad opinions of them. The best range hands down, would be Marshal. I didn't believe it either till I bought one. As far as range, a far second would be Quicktrack, or Wildlife changeable battery collars. Then Johnson. I like Johnson collars, they just don't all track the same. Better price though.

Marshall collars are the only way to go, they a very user freindly and they put out the best signal. As far as recievers go , go with the Marshall Stealth they beat anything on the market. You will be very impressed with Marshall.
We don't have hills here, we have mountains and very rough terrain. I have had both side by side , Marshall and Johnson, do yourself a favor and just go with the Marshall, you will be saving yourself time and money

Marshall Users..

How many hours are you getting out of your collars? They say on the website 500 hours or 7-14 days with using the light on the collar. Is that pretty acurate? I am leery of a collar with only that much life. Which 500 hours is still a lot, but not the 8000 and 10000 that I have now. I have never had a dog out more than about 24 hours..... but it worries me......

Mel, 7-14 days are with the lights on, I have some going on a year and a half and have never changed the batts. And I hunt almost every day. What is nice is you have a light that comes on when the batts are getting low. I don't know how many times I put a Johnson on and worried how much batt was left, it got so bad I would put my older ones on the worst dogs or the pups, that is how much I worried about it, I have had 3 Johnsons go dead on me in the feild. Don't get me wrong Johnsons are good collars but Marshalls are so much better. When the low batt light comes on you have 3 to 4 days before they go copletely dead. And how many of us don't have AA batts laying all around our trucks? If you don't they have them when you fill up your truck. I use the liuthum batts they last longer. The difference in a Marshall and any other is like 4x4 verses 2x4 in a truck.
I was just like everyone else, Johnsons were the best and I probly would still be thinking the same but I won a collar in a raffle and sold every thing I had to have just Marshall equipment, And I have never regreted it. Those who say Johnson is the best have never tried Marshall.
I had a Marshall hit by a car going 75 mph and dragged the collar about 200 yards, you can see the drag marks on it but the collar still works great, I know with a plastic caseing that collar would be done.

Mr. P

Thanks for that info.. Year and a half ain't bad at all. I may have to buy one to try next time out.. Having the light on the would be cherries It kinda sucks having your normal collar, tracking collar, lighted collar and then a shock collar on some dogs.. They need longer necks..

We have always had Johnson or Wilidlife materials... but I think I will buy a Marshall next time out and see how it does

I went to the Marshal website and I did not see a treeing switch as an option. Do they make a collar with a tree switch?
Kyle

Posted by mr.pacojack on 07-07-2007 10:20 PM:

All Marshall collars come with a tree switch and a dog down mode, which is very ,very nice.It lets you know when the dog has either layed up or is dead and no longer moving.

Mr paco how would you compare the wildlife 1000 to the Marshall stealth?

I had a trx 16 and a 1000 and sold them both. The 1000 is too big and bulky to carry so I bought the 16 because it was easier to carry but it wasn't as strong as the 1000. The stealth replaced both of them , more compact than the 16 and more powerful than the 1000 and easier to use than both of them. It has a memory for each collar so you don't have to fine tune the collar everytime, triger switch. Runs off 2 -9 volt batts you can buy at any gas station. more accurate than the 1000. less interference from power lines. less bounce. Try one you will sell the 1000, That thing was a pain in my back side.
