What do you call an accurate Dog?

What do you consider a average accurate dog and a above average dog. Be realistic.

I voted 18 out of 20.
But all 18 better have coons in them , not " coons and dens ".
And the out of 20 trees without seeing the coon , 18 better be legit den trees. And I don't believe in " cross-outs ".

19 out of 20 trees - coon seen - Princess (above average)
17 out of 20 trees - coon seen - good
15 out of 20 trees - coon seen - fair
10 out of 20 trees - coon seen - very very bad
less than 10 out of 20 trees - coon seen - PITIFULL

I do NOT count DENS. Sometimes all dogs are gonna tree a legit den tree. But it better not happen all the time.

im with you on that sheepster,

i like to see more coons then dens, it might have somthing to do with a hotter nosed dog, or mabey its that a dog runs track backwards to the den i dont know, but i still like to see coons and not trees with holes in em.

I like to see coons to, but I dont care if you got the fastest track dog in North America, sometimes (depending on weather, time of year, ect) your coons dont go far from the den and will always make it home. I dont like leafy trees without holes!

I'm as competitive as the next guy and would like to see more coons, but treein on dens is just the nature of this business...it happens and I don't think its all bad, its just not the best of both worlds LOL!!!

I guess my definition of accurate isn't defined from coons seen and dens its slicks vs dens. When you can count the number of slicks on one hand and still have one finger to spare for the whole hide season I think your ok.

If I lived and hunted in your area I would view things differently. I believe coons habits and routines are very different from the north to the south. I believe that up North "dens" are a whole lot more frequent and legit than down here. I have in fact saw a couple coons inside den trees before down here, but not much. There aren't many big hardwoods in the woods that don't have a hole in them somewhere.

To me an accurate dog is one with enough sense to run the track the right direction and enough nose to get to the end of the track.

I'm really surprised at some of these responses,The poll said AVERAGE ACCURATE. I think 14 out of 20 would be average, considering that is more than 50%. The votes for 18 out of 20 blew me away, that would be way above the national average if ALL coonhunters told the truth, not that any of these guys would fib!!!! LOL Todd

You have to take into consideration where some of the people hunt. Some of them show pictures of 150 to 200 coon killed in a season and there season ends early because of the weather. what is a good kill season for you? Prolly a lot less, I would guess because of your location.

That would be true about the location and treeing large amounts of coon but the %'s will be the same if you tree 500 or 50 if your dog is consistant. The most coon I have ever killed in N ky in 1 season was 53, and now that I am older and wiser I hang my head in shame. I realized that a TREEDOG doesn't need every coon it trees put down on him, and I would never shoot more than 1 out of a tree. I am not casting stones about that because I know the folks up North have a lot more coon than we do.I do think that a dog that takes a chance every now and then and gambles will tree more coon where coon are thin.I would like to hunt some of the Northern dogs in my country for 30 nights and see how many coon they tree, not that they couldn't but I believe it would take some time to acclimate themselves to this area and the coon being scarce.

I would think a dog that could have 18 out of 20 every time in any state you took him should be worth quite a bit of money.

Forget the numbers!

If you walk into a tree EXPECTING to see a coon, you've probably got a pretty accurate dog!

If you walk into a tree HOPING to see a coon, you probably don't have an accurate dog.

When people start talking about numbers and percentages, the lies and excuses start coming into play.
You either see the coon (100%), or you don't (0%). I don't accept very many dont's.

I usually know if I have a den before I walk in, because I know my dog, and I usually know the woods, and where the dens are! If I have to walk to a tree with a confidence of 70%, 80%, etc., then I don't fully trust the dog to show me a coon. If that's the case, the lack of confidence is probably justified by past performance.

I hear ya. I've known an owner of a grand nite that started shining the tree from the bottom of the tree upwards looking for a hole to make an excuse instead of looking for a coon.

I promise you 15 out of 20 is above the true average.

The other thing to consider is how many turnouts did it take to make 20 trees.

If I had a dog that had 19 out 20 coons on 20 turnouts I would own the coonhunts. Getting beat would be very rare for a man that has this. It's hard to imagine even being cheated out of many.

What if they had 19 out of 20 coons and the other 1 was an oppossum? I personally would rather walk to a slick tree every now and then.

According to some previous posts about Walker dogs by Sheep I would think the average would be 10 out of 20 or less.

Not an acceptable average , but the average still the same.

winning in competition has very little to do with Accuracy and Consisntency. It has a lot more to do with stuff like

1. Handling (first and foremost)
2. loudness (hard to call a dog treed that you can't hear on the other side of a mountain)
3. quickness to locate the tree
4. Not leaveing the tree come a Hurricane or World war 3.
5. Babbling (first strike)
